The Coyote Route

The Coyote is the being in charge of overseeing the "Camino del Coyote", a ceremony to heal the Navajos in which participate disguised representations of the divinities. It is necessary to carry out the ceremony if any member of the tribe suffers from the "coyote disease", which can manifest when one of these animals dies or even when his body is observed.

In the ritual, the patient assumes the role of a hero of a ceremonial myth, sitting on a painting drawn in the sand that represents an episode of the myth and "meeting" the Coyote, who appears as a masked personification. The ceremony guarantees the patient's health and restores his harmonious relationship with the Coyote and the world.
